Using Debit Cards

  • Tri-CAP
  • September 8, 2010

Nowadays, it’s so easy to just whip out that little plastic card to pay for your purchases – and it may also be dangerous to do so. The “plastic” I’m talking about isn’t your charge card: It’s your debit card. While it may seem like a credit card, it’s not. Debit cards are directly connected to your bank account and, when you use them, money is immediately taken out of your account or frozen.

What if your purchase is defective or someone steals your card? You don’t have the same protections as when using a credit card. And did you know that some places put holds on your account for more than the amount you spent? While the hold on your money may only be temporary, your money’s still tied up and unavailable to you.

To learn more about “10 Places Not to Use Your Debit Card,” log onto www.HelpWithMoney.org, click on “Resource Center,” then “Too Many Bills.” There you’ll find the afore-mentioned article and others like it. While it may be convenient to use your debit card, at times it may also be unwise.
