Tri-County Action Program Summer 2018
The Promise of Community Action
Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

As we enjoy the waning days of summer 2018, our Agency is engaged in many exciting ventures. For this letter I want to focus on the tremendous and varied need for transportation service and support across our service area.

Tri-CAP has been working with other organizations to plan an approach to provide assistance to families with lower incomes in need of private transportation. We are very excited to announce that this summer, Tri-CAP is launching a Donated Vehicle Program to help meet the need for affordable private transportation in our service area. The Donated Vehicle Program is a leap of faith in that the program will be sustained by the support of our community. Only with the generous vehicle donations from residents and business will the program succeed.

The Donated Vehicle Program works by Tri-CAP receiving donated vehicles from residents and businesses. It is these generous donors who literally provide the "engine" for this program. Tri-CAP accepts the vehicles and in-turn makes the vehicle available for sale to eligible families at very favorable prices. These low-cost vehicles will provide the transportation needed to access better jobs, school, daycare and mainstream grocery stores. Donating a vehicle helps a family in need of transportation. Donations are also tax deductible. If you have a vehicle to donate or know someone who does, please contact Tri-CAP. Your donation will help a local family in need of transportation while receiving a tax deduction.

In addition to private transportation needs, Tri-CAP is working on expanding our public transportation service. Beginning January 1, 2019, Tri-CAP will become the rural public transportation provider in Mille Lacs County. With a current public transit service area of Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, and Stearns Counties, the addition of Mille Lacs will increase the efficiency of our services across the three bordering counties and Mille Lacs. As with all Tri-CAP public bus transportation, service will be provided on a curb to curb, dial-a-ride and deviated route basis. All buses will be fully accessible and service will be available to the public with no eligibility guidelines.

Tri-CAP also provides a Volunteer Driver Program throughout our service area. Volunteer drivers set their own hours and use their own vehicles to provide transportation to residents needing to go the appointments, visitations, and to other communities. Volunteer drivers receive a mileage reimbursement in addition to the satisfaction of helping a neighbor in need. Tri-CAP is looking for volunteers who enjoy driving, want to make a difference, and can use the mileage reimbursement. If you or someone you know has some time to provide this service, please call Tri-CAP.

As a Community Action Agency, Tri-CAP supports the needs of local residents. We do this with the support of our partners in the community. There are many ways to help Tri-CAP from donating a vehicle, to signing up to be a volunteer driver, to making a financial gift to Tri-CAP, to telling people about Tri-CAP. I invite you to help Tri-CAP in whatever way you can as we help residents with lower incomes meet their basic needs and work toward self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Drivers Wanted - Receive a mileage reimbursement while providing an important service

Volunteer Drivers provide rides using their own private vehicles to residents of Benton, Stearns, Sherburne, Morrison, and soon Mille Lacs counties. Passengers are assigned to volunteers by the Tri-CAP dispatch center and may be traveling to medical appointments or a variety of other destinations. Volunteer Drivers are reimbursed at the Federal IRS rate, 54.5 cents for 2018, and may also be eligible for some meal reimbursements. Our Volunteer Drivers provide an important service to those in need in Tri-CAP's service area. If you enjoy driving and are interested in volunteering, please contact Tri-CAP or fill out an application available on our website: http://tricap.org/volunteer/
